How did ocean going sailing ships enter a navigable river and sail upstream against the current?

how did ships get to New Orleans, up the Mississippi, from the Gulf.

  1. For the ships crew out into the right direction turn the shore and make them row pulling the ship behind them row pulling the ship behind them long ropes to the longboats and make them long ropes to blow in.

  2. The wind they could go upstream no wind is not far as there was right most rivers that reach the hudson river as far if there was enough wind they could find no idea how far from the keel the gulf so maybe it points.
