Ryan B asked:

I’m interested in sailing yachts part time, a trip here and a trip there. I know people pay to have their yachts sailed from up north to Florida or from Florida to the Caribbean, how do I get a job doing that and how much does a captain typically make per trip?

  2. The first thing you need is a U.S.C.G. Captain’s license, and which type depends on the type and size of vessel that you’re planning to transport. Payment is usually per diem and a return ticket home.

  4. Hi. You need to have a captians lic. and by able to know
how to sail and understand all the sails and also have many
hours of sailing behind you this will take years when was the last time you seen a young captian. going from fla. to new jersey you can make about 4000.00 per trip

  5. Actually, i don’t think you need a ‘captains license’ to do yacht deliveries - just some one who owns a boat who is willing to give you money to deliver it. There are many types of USCG licenses. I have done deliveries for friends.family along the US Gulf as well as from Mexico back the US. I usually do this as MY vacation and just get my costs covered. You may want to check with a yacht broker, some one who sells yachts, because often these need to be delivered to the waters where the new owners wants his yacht kept. check with local yacht clubs. hang out at marinas, ask around etc.

    good luck!

  6. I have joined a tremendous organization called Offshore Passage oportunities. OPO you will find them on line if not call me membership around $199 per year I believe first year might be $99. They relay offers from owner or delivery captains who need crew. I have sailed since last December over 4000 miles offshore on yachts anywhere from 48 to 66 feet. Usually you do not get paid but all onboard expenses are taken care off. Some times your airfare as well. This is the oportunity to sail with extremely experience captains ( as some one said you dont see kids skippering delivery boats) and to accumulate the necessary hours to take your captain licence either six pax or 50 or 100tons. Trips offered cover the whole world beside the usual N E to FL and return and NE or FL Caraibien. You will meet interesting people most crew are seasoned sailors ranging from 50 to 70 Y old. No show off or airhead. This is a truly great oportunity. I am already booked next year for a transat on a Swan 47 and a Panama Gallapagos on a custom 66′ ketch I sailed on this year in Central America. Good luck
