Metal ones are marlin spikes for splicing wire rope and doing up shackles. Wooden ones are fids and used for splicing rope, fids have blunter tips but you can use a marlin spike for splicing rope if you are careful. Most rope can be spiced without using a fid or spike and if you can manage without one you are better not using one.
